Lonmin - Karee 3

Karee Mine is required to sustain its production output from the current No.3 Shaft UG2 workings.

The Karee No. 3 shaft UG2 decline on Lonmin Platinum Ltd, Marikana Division, will enable the mining of the UG2 on four levels between levels 21 and 25. The sub-decline will balance the depletion of Karee No.3 Shaft from a production and mining efficiency point of view. It will also ensure continued availability of stope faces at this shaft.

This involves the sinking of a 7m x 4m sub-decline shaft at -11 degrees from level 20 to level 25 with the associated level development on four levels (levels 22, 23, 24 and 25). Also included is the development of a 'chair lift decline' and all construction associated with the conveyor belt down the decline and ore passes needed to transfer ore from levels to the conveyor belt on the sub-decline.
