Hossy - leaders in safety three years in a row

Leon Bester 2

Hossy Shaft has a proud tradition in safety and for the third year in a row one of its members, Site Manager Leon Bester, received the “Shaft Sinkers Safety Man of the Year Award” for 2010 and the entire team celebrated this accolade.

Bester told shaftnews: “The keys to success are stability and consistency. Our labour turnover is almost zero and as a result, our people learn to work together and understand each other.”

He says he and his team are very proud to have achieved this great honour in safety and at the time of going to press they had reached more than 1187 LTI free days. “I personally think this is the company’s best. I believe that one man does not make a team, but a team will only be as good as its leader.”

Bester says the hard work must continue to maintain the high quality of work and safety and the site will “hopefully scoop the trophy once again.”

Kenny Gilmer, who was Site Manager at Hossy when he was awarded Safety Man of the Year for 2008, said Bester’s win was a “tremendous achievement” not only by Shaft Sinkers’ standards, but by industry standards as well.

He congratulated all concerned for the achievement, including Lonmin Senior Project Manager, Peter Wolff.
